Awards will be given in two categories: Master’s/Undergraduate student and Ph.D. student.
 
For the 2024 competition, we are offering a cash prize ($400 for Ph.D. and Master’s/Undergraduate) to be used for direct costs associated with proposed research project (i.e., research travel, supplies, etc.); salaries or indirect costs are not allowed.
 
APPLICATIONS DUE 10 PM EST, Friday March 8, 2024
 
A panel of PEC board members (excluding student members) will evaluate the proposals on a 50-point scale based on the following:
 
  1. Scientific Merit of the proposed research project, including originality of research, significance of the research to the PEC emphasis on Pleistocene and Holocene environmental change, quality of methods, and summary of anticipated results (30 points);
  2. Organization and clarity of the proposal (5 points);
  3. Qualifications of the student to successfully conduct proposed research project (10 points); and
  4. Impact the award will have on applicant’s academic/professional career (5 points).
 
To apply for this competition, you must be a current member of both the AAG and the PEC Specialty Group and submit the following electronically in a single attached pdf file to Dr. Maegen Rochner (maegen.rochner@louisville.edu) by 10 PM EST, Friday March 8, 2024. Please use 2024 PEC Student Research Competition as the subject line of your email:
 
  1. Cover sheet (1 page, see below).
  2. Research proposal (2-page, double-spaced, 12-point font, 1 inch margins that includes a brief summary for the proposed research, a rough timeline for the proposed research, an explanation of how the funding will contribute to the project, and references).
  3. Abbreviated biographical sketch/CV, including research experience and past and existing grants/awards from other sources (1-page maximum).
  4. Letter of support from student’s faculty advisor should be sent directly from the supervisor to maegen.rochner@louisville.edu
 
2024 winners will be announced at the PEC Specialty Group business meeting held at the annual AAG meeting.

The Paleoenvironmental Change Specialty Group sponsors three annual awards to encourage student participation in the annual meeting and to recognize outstanding student research.  Competition for the award is open to undergraduate and graduate students (including those who have defended their Ph.D. within the last year).

  • PhD Student Paper
Students are encouraged to submit to the appropriate award category. For example, students in the early stages of their masters or doctoral research should apply for the poster competition. Those students nearing the completion of their respective degrees should consider applying for the paper sessions. The student must be either the sole author or the primary author of the paper, and must be the presenter at the meeting.

Judging criteria include:
  1. the significance and originality of the research question,
  2. the creativity and the quality of the methodology,
  3. the validity of the conclusions drawn from the results, and
  4. the clarity of the presentation

This session(s) will focus on peat ecology, and the use of peatlands in paleoenvironmental reconstruction. Topics for papers may include, but are certainly not limited to, peatland ecological or hydrological dynamics, 
peatland floristics, regional distributions of peatlands, reconstruction of vegetation history using pollen analysis, paleohydrology reconstructions using peat stratigraphy, humification analysis, and/or testate amoebae studies.

In order to participate in this session, please register for the AAG Annual Meeting, and provide us with your abstract and program identification number (PIN) by November 4, 2014.  We will submit the seesion(s) by the November 5 deadline.

]]><![CDATA[Call for Abstracts (AAG) - Pyrogeography]]>Wed, 22 Oct 2014 04:57:25 GMThttp://www.aagpec.org/announcements/call-for-abstracts-aag-pyrogeographyPyrogeography seeks to understand the spatio-temporal patterns of fire as a function of the complex interplay of human and environmental factors.  Over the past century, there have been enormous changes in human perceptions and uses of fire around the world. Moreover, climate and fuel conditions have been rapidly changing in recent decades, further altering interactions between fire and its various controls...
Fire researchers are increasingly seeking ways to integrate multiple perspectives and sources of data and information to better understand the changing dimensions of fire regimes, whether expressed through shifts in extent of area burned, fire frequency, type, severity, or seasonality. All methodological approaches are welcome and we especially welcome mixed-method research approaches. Research approaches may span local to global scales, and include diverse approaches from geography and anthropology, based on paleoecological, dendrochronological, archaeological, historical, satellite, mixed-methods, and other modern approaches, as well as global and regional fire modeling research, and fusions of these methods.

]]><![CDATA[Call for Posters (AAG) - Physical Geography]]>Sat, 18 Oct 2014 23:38:44 GMThttp://www.aagpec.org/announcements/call-for-posters-aag-physical-geographyThere will be a special poster session at this year's AAG meeting coordinated to coincide with the Physical Geography Symposium on environmental reconstruction.  A description of the session and other information is given below.  If any of you would like to present a poster at this session, please contact Don Sullivan (dsulliva@du.edu) or Maria Caffrey (Maria.Caffrey@colorado.edu) as soon as possible so that we may group our posters together in a special PEC-sponsored subsection.

The Physical Geography poster session is on Thursday, April 23, 2015 at the AAG meeting in Chicago.
Please join our effort to promote the Physical Geography poster session that will take place on Thursday afternoon, April 23, 2015 at the AAG meeting in Chicago.  We encourage ALL physical geographers, at all career stages, to consider presenting their work in poster format at this year's AAG meeting.
Here is the vision: The session will be set up to hold 100 posters, grouped by theme and/or specialty group.  As part of the Physical Geography Symposium on environmental reconstruction, a featured section of the poster session will be dedicated to posters on topics related to environmental reconstruction. Other sections will be open to all types of research in physical geography.  With the aim of giving posters at our AAG meeting the level of organization and respect given to posters at American Geophysical Union meetings, we will work with you to identify and name (with signage) sections or sub-sections that pertain specifically to your specialty group.  For example, it would be possible hold your own group's poster competition as part of this larger event.

One advantage of this large poster session is that posters will be up for 8 hours: they will be put up from 10:30 am to 1:30 pm and remain on display until 7:30 pm. Presenters won't need to be there the entire time. They are encouraged to stand by their posters during the happy hour period (4:30 to 7:30).  Another advantage is that happy hour refreshments will be available beginning at 4:30 pm-the poster session is intended to cap off the Physical Geography Symposium and be a gathering and networking place for physical geographers. 

We hope that the large size of the poster session, the refreshments, the opportunity to have one's poster visible for many hours, and the chance to hang out with potentially hundreds of physical geographers, from famous names to new blood, will make this an attractive option for presenters and attendees.  We already know that the session will be on Thursday afternoon, so those who present in it can plan their AAG travel dates even before the final program is released (no last-minute discoveries of being the last presenter on the last day). 

The Chicago AAG meeting's Physical Geography Symposium on environmental reconstruction and high-visibility poster session are new ventures in the AAG.  We hope that symposia and large poster sessions of this type (now and in future years) will help build community and across-specialty-group acquaintances among physical geographers.  Also, putting more attention on posters has the potential to reduce the number of small oral sessions and free up session times for special themed sessions and symposia.

A few nuts and bolts:  Physical geographers should submit their poster abstracts directly to the AAG meeting organizers (note the Nov. 5th deadline).  They should use the Special Requests area on the abstract submission form to indicate interest in being in this session, including requests (if appropriate) for inclusion in the environmental reconstruction section of the poster session, and send Carol Harden (charden@utk.edu) a copy of their abstract confirmation.  Any specialty group or individual who wishes to identify/coordinate a special sub-section of the poster session should contact Carol Harden with the theme and participant names.  Meanwhile, Carol and a small team of volunteers will work with the meeting organizers to organize the posters in this large session.  What if too many abstracts are submitted for a 100-place poster session?  We'll cross that bridge when we come to it... (after all, this is a work in progress and that would be a happy problem).
